Ingredients
Pretzels: you'll need the small, hard, baked pretzels for this recipe, not the big soft bready kind. Salted pretzels are fine, the salt provides a nice contrast to the chocolate.
Orange chocolate or candy melts: are the easiest thing to use as they are already the right color. If you can't get orange chocolate you could try using white chocolate melts and mix in orange gel food color. For more details on this method see my Shamrock pretzels recipe.
Green chocolate coated candy: such as M&M's, for the stem of the 'pumpkins'
Optional:
Refined coconut oil - sometimes also called expeller-pressed coconut oil. Using refined coconut oil is important because the refining process removed the coconut flavor and smell, resulting in neutral oil.
If your candy melts aren't melting enough to a smooth, pourable, dippable consistency, adding a little refined coconut oil can be a good way to thin it out enough to work with.
How to make pumpkin pretzels
See the full recipe card at the end of the post for ingredient amounts and instructions.
Line a tray with baking paper. Melt the chocolate. I find it easiest to do this in a microwave-proof bowl in the microwave, in one minute or so bursts, stirring well as needed.
Alternatively you can use a double boiler, or at a pinch, a heat-proof bowl over a pot of hot water. Take care not to burn yourself. Ensure the water does not touch the bottom of the bowl and that you don't get any water into your chocolate or it will seize.
Dip the pretzels into the orange chocolate one at a time. A metal skewer can be useful to help push the pretzels around in the chocolate to coat it and to fish them out of the chocolate.
Once out of the chocolate gently hold the edge of the pretzel. This makes it easier to shake off the excess chocolate and place the pretzels on the baking paper.
Add a green chocolate candy stem to the top. Make sure the pretzels and the candy touch well or they won't stick together.
Repeat with the remaining pretzels until you have run out of pretzels, chocolate and green candy. Allow to set on the bench or in the fridge until the chocolate is completely set and dry.
Once set carefully peel back the baking paper and you're done!
How to serve
To serve these pumpkin chocolate covered pretzels pop them onto a plate and enjoy! Perfect for Thanksgiving a Halloween party, or a fun holiday activity to do with the kids.
How to store
These fall pumpkin pretzels will store well in an airtight container lined with baking paper for up to three days. After that they will still be edible but the pretzels may start to lose their crunch.
Recipe tips and frequently asked questions
My chocolate/candy melts are too thick, help!
Try adding a little
My green candy stems keep falling over when I try to add them.
This can happen if your chocolate is particularly warm or thin. Try leaving them for a couple of minutes to harden slightly before adding the stems. I usually dip and lay out about half about dozen pretzels, then go back and add stems.
The chocolate coating on my pretzels has gone a funny crackly pattern.
The chocolate may have 'bloomed'. This can happen when the ingredients in the chocolate move around. It's still delicious and safe perfectly safe to eat, it just looks a little different. Leave them as they are for a cool (totally on purpose!) effect, or gently brush them with a clean, food-safe brush before serving.

📋 Recipe
Pumpkin pretzels
Ingredients
- 1 packet (7 oz/ 200 gms) small crunchy pretzels
- 10 oz packet (290 gms) orange chocolate or candy melts
- ¼ cup green chocolate candy such as M&Ms
Instructions
- Line a couple of baking trays with parchment paper.
- Find the whole unbroken pretzels. Put aside the broken pieces to eat later.
- Melt the chocolate. It's easiest to do this in a microwave-proof bowl in the microwave, for one minuet bursts, stirring as needed until the chocolate is melted. Alternatively you can use a double boiler but be careful not to get any water in the chocolate or it will seize.
- Working quickly dip each pretzel into the chocolate. It can help to use a skewer to move the pretzels around the chocolate to help coat them and fish them out of the chocolate.
- Take the chococlate coated pretzel out of the chocolate. Shake off any excess and place it on the parchment paper.
- Place a green candy at the top of the pretzel to form the stem. Ensure it the stem is pressed into the chocolate or it won't stick properly.
- If there is a small gap in the chocolate on the pretzel where you held onto it when getting it out of the chocolate you can fill this in with a small blob of chocolate.
- Repeat until you have formed all your pumpkins.
- Allow to set on the bench or in the fridge for about an hour, or until chocolate is fully dry.
- Carefully peel back the baking paper to remove and enjoy!
