Ingredients
Cranberries: this recipe uses two x 12 ounce bags of frozen cranberries or 24 ounces (1.5 lbs) in total. You could use the same amount of fresh cranberries.
Grand Marnier: is an orange liqueur made with Cognac and bitter oranges. It can be substituted with similar orange liqueurs such as Cointreau, triple sec or curacao.
Clementines or mandarins: clementines will give the best flavor. If you can't get clementines you can use mandarins, preferably one of the sweeter varieties, or orange juice if can't get either. As always fresh is best.
Granulated sugar: to balance the tartness of the cranberries. Granulated will give the cleanest flavor but you could try different sugars to mix things up.
Allspice: adds a hit of wonderful festive spice to this sauce. You could also use a mix of cinnamon and cloves instead or leave it out.
How to make cranberry sauce with Grand Marnier
See the recipe card at the end of the post for ingredient amounts and instructions.
If using frozen cranberries defrost them fully first. If using fresh cranberries give them a wash first.
Blend the cranberries with an immersion blender until relatively smooth. Make sure your jug or bowl is deep enough or you will get cranberry pieces everywhere!
For a smooth sauce, strain the blitzed cranberries. This step is optional but it helps you ensure you get a nice smooth sauce with none of those little cranberry seeds.
Add the blitzed, strained cranberries to a pot with the sugar, clementine juice, allspice and Gran Marnier. Heat on medium-low for about ten minutes, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens.
Serve immediately for warm cranberry sauce, or allow to chill and refrigerate to serve cold.
How to serve
To serve this cranberry coulis spoon it over your favorite holiday dish, including my festive cranberry cheesecake. Or pop it into a serving bowl and let your guests serve themselves. The beautiful bright red color will add a festive pop to any Thanksgiving or Christmas table.
How to store
In the fridge: in a covered container, for up to two weeks.
In the freezer: in an airtight container, for up to two months.
