Ah Nutella. Chocolaty hazelnutty goodness that hits the spot every time. But have you ever been standing there eating Nutella from a jar with a spoon (ahem) and thought to yourself, dang, what this Nutella really needs is to be runny enough to drizzle over a big bowl of ice cream...

Me too 🙂 But I have the solution. Two words - Nutella topping. It's quick, easy and likely uses the ingredients you already have. You'll be drizzling that pourable Nutella before you can say pass me the spoon 🙂

    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Simple recipe with just three ingredients.
    • Delicious Nutella in a runny, pourable consistency.
    • Perfect over ice cream, cheesecake, pancakes or your favorite dessert, or just lick it off the spoon, yum!

Need more Nutella desserts in your life, and let's face it who doesn't? Why not try my Ferrero Rocher ice cream, epic Ferro Rocher cheesecake or fun Nutella cheesecake sticks.

    Ingredients

Nutella sauce ingredients: instant coffee, Nutella, milk.

Nutella: essential for this Nutella sauce. You could sub it with your fav brand of hazelnut spread, but I haven't tested it with other brands.

Milk: to get a smooth pourable sauce. I use full-fat cow's milk but you can use whatever type you like. If it's lower fat your sauce will have less flavor.

Instant coffee: a little coffee helps enhance the flavor of this chocolate-flavored topping. Use the stuff you'd be happy to drink, life is too short for bad coffee!

    How to make Nutella sauce

See the full recipe card at the end of the post for ingredient amounts and instructions.

Heat the milk in a heatproof bowl in the microwave. Add the instant coffee and whisk well until all the coffee is dissolved.

Process shots: dissolving coffee in warm milk, adding Nutella, whisking in.

Add the Nutella and whisk well until fully mixed in and smooth and glossy. Serve warm or allow to cool if you're serving it over cheesecake or it'll melt your cake!

    How to serve

Top down view of Nutella sauce in a serving bowl with a spoon, with hazelnuts and jar of Nutella beside it.

To serve this delectable Nutella topping drizzle it over your favourite dessert, be it a scoop of easy vanilla ice cream, coat cheesecake sticks in it or on a stack of steaming piklets (mini pancakes) for breakfast. Delicious!

    How to store

In the fridge: in a covered container for up to five days.

Tips for success and frequently asked questions

Can I use a different brand of chocolate hazelnut spread?

In theory yes, just swap it for your favorite brand. There are lots of alternatives out there and I haven't had a chance to test them all. We just buy Nutella in our house 🙂 (not sponsored!).

    My sauce isn't pouring...

It might be too cold. Try gently warming the sauce or add a dash of milk to thin it out.

Mason jar of Nutella sauce on a plate, with a spoon and hazelnuts on the side and jar of Nutella in the background.

    My sauce is too thin...

It might be too warm, or have too much milk. Try whisking in a bit more Nutella to thicken it up.

Can I leave out the coffee?

Yes you can, your sauce will be a little less rich-tasting if you do this.

Can I add other flavors to this?

Absolutely. Leave out the coffee and try one of the following add-ins:
    - 1 teaspoon fresh orange zest for chocolate orange.
½ teaspoon warming spice, such as cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger.
    - A few drops of mint essence for chocolate mint.
    - A few shakes of chili flakes or cayenne pepper for spicy chocolate chili.

    Notes

    Hazelnut spread:
I used good old Nutella but you can use your preferred hazelnut spread of choice.
    Coffee:
Normally I'm not a fan of instant anything, least of all coffee.  But it occasionally has its uses.  Use a good quality instant, preferably one you can tolerate drinking.
