A review of Peter's Affogato Drumstick, a colab with Gelato Messina

An Affogato is type of coffee, usually made by pouring a shot of hot espresso coffee over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
It combines two of the great loves of my life, coffee and ice cream. So you can imagine how keen I was to try the new Affogato Drumstick, a collaboration with Gelato Messina. It also happens to be vegan which doesn't bother me either way as long as it tastes good.

The drumstick looks good with gooey enticing swirls of caramel which go all the way through the ice cream. There's a generous sprinkle of what appears to be candied coffee granules. It definitely tastes of coffee. But unfortunately not much of ice cream. The ice cream is dull and light, in the sense it hardly tastes of anything much at all. There's a bit of sugar but no much else. Perhaps the faintest whiff of coconut. There's none of the luscious, creaminess of melted vanilla ice cream mingling with rich hot espresso you get with a real Affogato.

Quite frankly I expected more from Gelato Messina but maybe this is what happens when big business meets artisan, something inevitably gets lost in translation
If you like coffee you may like these but if you're an ice cream lover to you may well be disappointed.

I LOVE messina but am yet to taste their drunstrick range. Luckily for me there is a shop just up the road - think I’ll stick to buying it from there though by the looks of it
I've never had a bad ice cream directly from the shop. Some of the non vegan one's I've had have been OK, but this one was very lacklustre! Best to stick to the original perhaps 🙂
